Dell VxRail E560 node

A VxRail node is a PowerEdge R640 in VxRail trim — same chassis, board and options, sold as part of a VxRail cluster. Trade listings describe it as "VxRail E560F, PowerEdge R640, 10-bay SFF 1U". Treat the R640 sheet as the hardware reference.

Hardware

  • See R640.md — 1U, two Intel Xeon Scalable (LGA3647), 24 DDR4 DIMM slots
  • E560 is the hybrid variant: SFF front bays with a mix of SSD cache and HDD capacity
  • Commonly supplied with HBA330 (VxRail requires pass-through, not RAID) and mini-mono controller
  • Typically 2–3 PCIe cards; NICs are often removed on resale units ("no NIC" in listings)

What differs from a plain R640

  • VxRail firmware/licensing is tied to the cluster, not the hardware — a resold node is normally hardware only
  • VMware vSAN requires a supported HBA in pass-through mode; a RAID PERC is not a substitute
  • Node-to-node consistency matters: clusters expect matched CPU, memory and drives

What to confirm before quoting

  • Controller fitted (HBA330 vs PERC) — it decides whether the node can rejoin a vSAN cluster
  • Whether NICs and rails are present
  • Drive population; all-flash (F) versus hybrid

Buying a Dell E560 from IT Server Exchange

Every unit is tested before it ships and its condition is stated up front. Build one to your own specification in the configurator — processors, memory, drives, controllers, network cards and rails are matched to this chassis, so the parts offered are the ones that fit — then send the configuration over and we'll quote it.
